Lotus Development Corporation was co-founded by Mitch Kapor and Jonathan Sachs in the year 1982.

Apple Computers was co-founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne in the year 1976.

Hotmail, web-based email service, was co-founded by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia and launched in 1996.

Autodesk was founded by John Walker and twelve other co-founders in the year 1982.

Broadcom Corporation, an American supplier of ICs for broadband communications, was founded by Henry Samueli and Henry T. Nicholas III in the year 1992.

Sega: Sega is a very famous gaming console manufacturing company. Sega stands for SErvice and GAmes.

TWAIN: TWAIN stands for “Technology Without An Interesting Name”.

WIPRO: WIPRO Stands for Western India Vegetable PROducts.

Cisco Systems: The name Cisco is derived from San Francisco, the city where it was found.

Guruji.com: It is an Indian Internet Search Engine. Guruji.com is derived from the Sanskrit word for teacher,Guru. The search engine aims at giving its “students”(its users) what they require.

NOKIA Corporation: NOKIA gets its name from the town of Nokia by Nokianvirta river. The name Nokia orignated from the river which flowed through the town.

SUN Microsystems: SUN stands for Stanford University Network. It was incorporated by Scott McNealy, Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim and Bill Joy, the first three being Stanford students.

GNU: GNU is a recursive abbreviation for GNU is Not Unix. It is an organization founded by Richard Stallman.

ITTAM: ITTIAM is an acronym for “I Think Therefore I AM“, propounded by Rane Descartes.

What were they known earlier? #1

Some of the present companies had a different name when they started off their venture, but over the course of time they switched to different and more suitable names. In this post i will list some such companies.

Oracle: It was earlier called as Software Development Laboratories (SDL). In 1978 it changed its name to Relational Software Inc (RSI). The present name was derived from the company’s 1st top secret contract from CIA codenamed Oracle.

IBM: International Business Machines(IBM) was earlier called as Computing Tabulating Recording Company(CTRC).

AOL: American Online(AOL) was founded by Steve Case as Quantum Computer Services.

Tata Indicom: The company’s original name was Tata Teleservices.

Motorola: It was founded by Paul V, Galvin as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928.

Toshiba: It was started as Tokyo Electric Works in 1875

SCO: Santa Cruz Operations(SCO) was previously called Caldera Systems.

Xerox Corporation: This company was started as “Haloid Company” in 1906.
