Etymology of Company Names

Sega: Sega is a very famous gaming console manufacturing company. Sega stands for SErvice and GAmes.

TWAIN: TWAIN stands for “Technology Without An Interesting Name”.

WIPRO: WIPRO Stands for Western India Vegetable PROducts.

Cisco Systems: The name Cisco is derived from San Francisco, the city where it was found.

Guruji.com: It is an Indian Internet Search Engine. Guruji.com is derived from the Sanskrit word for teacher,Guru. The search engine aims at giving its “students”(its users) what they require.

NOKIA Corporation: NOKIA gets its name from the town of Nokia by Nokianvirta river. The name Nokia orignated from the river which flowed through the town.

Citrix Systems: Citrix name is a portmanteau of Citrus and UNIX.

Adobe: The name ADOBE came from the river Adobe creek that ran behind the house of John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe.

Fair Isaac Corporation: The company is named after the founders Bill Flair and Earl Isaac.

Compaq: The name “COMPAQ” was derived from “COMPatibility And Quality”.

Hewlett Packard: Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Infosys: Infosys, an Indian Software Major, derived its name from INFOrmation SYStems”.

LG: The name is derived from combination of two popular Korean brands, Lucky and Goldstar.

Lycos: Lycos, a search engine and web portal centered around broadband entertainment content, got its name from Lycosidae, the family of wolf spiders.

Vodafone: Derived from VOice, DAta, TeleFONE.
